Ad Campaign’s Basic Message and Possible Themes/Narratives for NORML

Message: Submission for this year's ad contest should highlight the 20-million+ pot arrests that have occurred since 1965. Outrage at 20 million cannabis-related arrests and their huge human and financial costs, 9 out of 10 arrests for simple possession.

Possible Themes/Narratives (mused about one day, after 4:20…):

  • What if President-Elect Barack Obama had been one of the 20 million Americans busted for pot?
  • What if someone you knew were the 20-millionth cannabis arrest in America? What if I were the 20-millionth cannabis arrest? What would the consequences and penalties be?
  • A mock game show where the contestant ‘wins’ the 20-millionth arrest for cannabis.
  • An Ed McMahon-type fronting for a sweepstake company arrives along with the SWAT team to ‘congratulate’ the ‘winner’ of the 20-millionth cannabis arrest.
  • A band of well-meaning, but kind of naďve group of cannabis consumers competing for the honor of being the 20 millionth citizen arrested for the sacred and healing plant.
  • A take-off on your favorite cop/crime/lawyer TV show where, you know who gets busted!
  • A mock newscast where the 20 millionth arrest for cannabis is, well, news.
  • Or create something in a video format that no one else has ever thought of, something that drives home the enormity of this social disaster called ‘Marijuana Prohibition’, something that will never change until the American people say to themselves, “Enough! 20 million marijuana arrests is way more than Enough!”…and then the people must say the very same thing to their elected officials.
